Microsoft Joins google to create New Generation of Web Applications

Progressive apps use emerging web browser APIS & feature, along with traditional progressive enhancement strategy, to bring native app-like user experience to the cross-platform web applications.

There are many operating systems available today, from Windows to macOS, Linux to Android, and iOS, a bit far too many for developers, especially lone ones, to support equally.

There is also no shortage of frameworks & tools, like Qt or Google’s Flutter, designed to make that a little less painful but the one platform for that truly permeates all of these is the Web.

That is basically the appeal of the new generation of web apps, called Progressive Web Apps, and two of the world’s larger software vendors are working together to make PWAs more like first-class citizens of the Google Play Store.

PWABuilder.com is Microsoft’s open-source development tool that helps you build high-quality PWAs and publish them in app stores.

Bubblewrap is Google’s command-line utility and library to generate and sign Google Play Store packages from Progressive Web Apps.

When installed on Android, any shortcuts that you can implement will work as expected when long-pressing a home icon on your smartphone.

Google and Microsoft are leaning hard on PWAs for their own reasons.

On top of this push to improve PWAs across the web and Google Play Store, Microsoft and Google are partnering with Project Fugu to incubate new web platform features PWAs also being a core proponent in this side collaboration.
